SCENARIO: The Scent of Blood
Created by Steve Gormley - HARPBBS#290@7850
This scenario is meant to be played from the NATO side only.

Background:

In the previous scenario, NATO had sent a large carrier task force
north to destroy the soviet airfields that were so effective at the
start of the war. The task force managed to destroy Kildistenroy and
Orland, and seriously damage Keflavik. In the process, it destroyed
85% of the Soviets Backfire and Badger bomber aircraft. Those that
remain have been pulled out of the theater to regroup.

While NATO achieved its objective, it ended up paying an
enormous price for it in the end. While withdrawing through the GIUK
gap, the task force encountered massive numbers of Soviet submarines.
This submarine force managed to sink the Eisenhower and Forrestal
carriers, the Yorktown and Leyte Gulf Aegis cruisers, and several of
the Spruance class destroyers. In addition, the Roosevelt was badly
damaged, and will not be able to put to sea for at least six weeks.
This leaves NATO with the Saratoga as the only serious carrier left in
the Atlantic.

The Soviet navy, having picked up the 'Scent of Blood' by its
victory over the NATO carriers, is convinced that submarines, if
deployed in sufficient numbers, can take control of the Atlantic.
The politburo, impressed by the victory, has agreed to the plan.
However, they insist that the remaining Air Force units be used to
supplement naval assets in the Atlantic.

Blue Orders:

You are to use the resources at your disposal to prevent the
Soviets from taking control of the Atlantic shipping lanes. The
Saratoga carrier group has been recalled from the Med, and is steaming
north. The naval air assets at Norfolk have been released for your use,
since the carriers they were reserved for are now artificial reefs at
the bottom of the Atlantic. The remnants of the first task force are
currently docked in the U.K. The British have put the Invincible at
your disposal also, since their survival depends on open shipping lanes.

Intelligence Brief:

Intelligence reports indicate that the damage to Keflavik has been
repaired, and that there are at least seven squadrons of aircraft based
there, composition unknown. The SOSUS network has tracked at least 20
submarines north of Iceland, and several attack boats that have made it
into the Atlantic already. There are at least four squadrons of Bear
bombers at Shagui, but no one is sure how aggressively they will be used.

Victory Conditions:

The goal in this scenario is the long term protection of
merchant shipping traffic. You will not only have to get your
merchant fleet to Europe, but back again to win a victory.

Since the Scenario Editor doesn't have a way to check if you went
across the Atlantic before docking in the U.S., this will require
some honesty on your part...

Minimum: Get at least 15 ships to within 75 miles of Lorient, France,
then bring them back to within 75 miles of Norfolk.

Total: Get at least 25 ships to within 75 miles of Lorient, France,
then bring them back to within 75 miles of Norfolk.
